Google's Mobile Armageddon
Today is the day that Google search results will take into account the mobile friendliness of a website when ranking it in search results.
Mobile friendly websites should follow development best practices that:
- Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
- Uses text that is readable without zooming
- Sizes content to the screen so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
- Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
Google has provided a test for checking your website's mobile friendliness.
The reasoning behind the change is that Google basic function is to provide the most relevant and quality results for the search terms entered. Given that the last few years has seen a significant rise in traffic from mobile they see mobile friendliness as a significant factor in determining the relevancy and quality of those links. A mobile friendly site is going to be of more benefit to a user on a mobile therefore Google will provide it with more ranking signal in search results.
